NSW: Universities have failed in crime debate: Professor

A Sydney law professor says universities have failed in the public debate over crime issues.

Professor DAVID DIXON says they have not done enough research and have allowed unqualified
academics to declare themselves experts.

The University of New South Wales academic says the robust debate on law and order
must be better informed.

Professor DIXON has pointed the finger at universities for the lack of good research
being produced and the willingness of incompetent people to speak out.

But he says it is politicians seeking easy votes, and media commentators who use inadequate
sources and stereotypes, who appear to be most prepared to offer opinions on crime issues.
