Humanity's Loss.(Main)

The death of Pope John XXIII takes from the Roman Catholic Church one of the most extraordinary Pontiffs in its centuries-old history, and takes from men and women everywhere a soldier of God whose compassion encompassed them all.

Varying estimates of his reign and its accomplishments will be given until history writes the final verdict. For inevitably, by reason of the things he did and proposed to do, Pope John became a controversial figure, even among Roman Catholics themselves.

But that final verdict and the judgments that precede it must acknowledge, it seems to us, that he was a spiritual leader of great heart, quiet, shining courage, abiding humility, …
