NSW: Mel donates $1m to NIDA, where he studied acting

MEL GIBSON has donated $1 million to the Sydney college where he trained as an actor.

The donation to the National Institute of Dramatic Art, from GIBSON's estimated $115
million fortune, was announced at a function in Sydney to celebrate NIDA's 40th birthday.

The Daily Telegraph says the money will help the Kensington-based institute to build a new
theatre, film and television studio and performance arts library.

GIBSON, who lives in Los Angeles and makes about $20 million per movie, studied acting for
three years at NIDA from 1977.

His classmates included JUDY DAVIS and GEOFFREY RUSH.

The actor couldn't attend yesterday's birtthday bash because he was in the middle if
filming The Million Dollar Hotel with director WIM WENDERS.
