Qld: Gold Coast gas leak under control
BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - A gas leak that saw hundreds of people evacuated from a popular
Surfers Paradise shopping precinct is under control.
Tradesman ruptured a natural gas line on Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise, just after
8am (AEST) on Monday, police said.
A 500-metre exclusion zone was set up around the leak and around 300 people were ordered
to leave businesses, stores and high-rise apartments within the area.
Gas inspectors were working to isolate the leak and firefighters in breathing apparatus
were conducting gas monitoring.
Police say the situation was declared safe at 11.15am (AEST), with business people,
shop owners and members of the public able to return to the area.
