FED:Fewer teen girls completing vaccine course

The Cancer Council is urging the federal government to release current cervical cancer
vaccine data .. after a recent study showed a drop-off in the number of teenage girls
completing the three-dose course.

Government data for 2007 to 2009 has shown all states have fallen below minimum coverage
guidelines set out by health experts.

The Department of Health data also shows a drop in the number of girls aged 12 to 13
completing the three stage vaccine process .. from 83 per cent who started the course
in 2007 to 73 per cent.

The Council says they'll have much less protection against human papillomavirus types

A military inquiry found the soldier shot himself while skylarking with his gun ..

After almost two months of evidence .. the jury of three men and three women were asked

Qld: Independent study backs Traveston dam plans

BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - An independent engineering report has backed the Queensland
government's plans for the controversial Traveston Crossing Dam.

The review was commissioned after protesters and federal coalition MPs argued the government
was wrong on issues such as hydrological modelling, leakage, evaporation rates and design.

The Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) report said geological tests and
an examination of the $1.7 billion dam's design showed the risk of leakage was "insignificant".

"Work done to date on the preliminary design of Traveston Crossing Dam provides an
excellent basis for a successful project," the report concluded.

The review noted the estimates of evaporation and seepage losses were reasonable.

The proposed dam has an anticipated annual yield of 70,000 megalitres a year, and a
153,000ML capacity.

Deputy Premier Anna Bligh said last week's rain in the Mary River catchment peaked
at nearly 45,000ML a day - up from 20ML a day during the previous two weeks.

"This would fill an Olympic swimming pool every five seconds," Ms Bligh said.

Vic: F1 ace urges motorists to watch for bikes

MELBOURNE, April 3 AAP - Formula One star Mark Webber today urged Australian motorists
to take a leaf out of the European book and pay more attention to cyclists on the road.

Webber, who admits to being a huge cycling fan, said while motorists in Victoria had
improved in their attitude towards cyclists in the last five years, the rest of the country
was not so patient.

"Sometimes road users may not have an idea how much room a cyclist needs," said Webber,
who is a patron of the Amy Gillett Foundation, launched in Melbourne today.

"I've ridden my bike in many different parts of the world, the culture is different
in Spain, in Italy and in the UK, and in Victoria the culture is very, very good.

"But there's probably other parts of Australia where (cyclists) are not as well accepted."

The foundation has been set up in memory of the Australian cyclist who was killed by
a motorist while training with five teammates in Germany in July 2005.

It aims to promote a safe relationship between cyclists and motorists, provide an annual
scholarship for emerging female cyclists and help the five women injured in the crash.

Up and coming cyclist Jessie Maclean, from Canberra, is the first recipient of the scholarship.

Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General: Two Montgomery County Residents Face Welfare-Fraud Charges.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Pa. Inspector General Albert H. Masland today announced that felony welfare-fraud charges have been filed against two Montgomery County residents. The two individuals, in unrelated incidents, allegedly collected a total of more than $10,250 in public- assistance benefits to which they were not entitled.

"Individuals who deliberately try to defraud the system will inevitably be caught and punished," Masland said. "It is the Office of Inspector General's duty to maintain the integrity of public-assistance programs. Once again, I thank Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor for his help in bringing these cases to prosecution."

Claims Investigation Agent Charles G. Draus from the Office of Inspector General's (OIG) Central Region Office filed the charges against the Montgomery County residents.

The individuals against whom charges were filed are listed below: -- Arthur Freedman, 56, of Haverford is accused of unlawfully receiving more than $5,400 in cash assistance and food-stamp benefits to which he was not eligible at various times from April 2000 to October 2001. Freedman allegedly failed to report his employment and wages from Robert Half of Pennsylvania, which would have affected his eligibility for public assistance; and -- Raymond Reddick, 55, of Pottstown is accused of unlawfully collecting more than $4,850 in cash assistance and food-stamp benefits to which he was not entitled at various times from April 1999 to August 2000. Reddick allegedly failed to report his Veterans Administration benefits, information that would have impacted his eligibility for welfare benefits.

Preliminary hearings for both of these cases will be scheduled at a later date before District Justice Robert A. Saraceni.

Recipients who are found guilty of welfare fraud may face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, fines up to $15,000, mandatory restitution to the Commonwealth and program disqualification. The OIG is responsible for investigating welfare fraud and conducting collection activities for programs administered by the Department of Public Welfare.

Each year, the OIG works with county assistance offices statewide to identify suspected cases of welfare fraud and with local district attorneys to bring the cases to prosecution. Learn more about the OIG on the Internet at http://www.state.pa.us/, PA Keyword: "Inspector General."

The Office of Inspector General also relies on tips from citizens. Inspector General Masland urges anyone with information on suspected fraud to call the Welfare Fraud TipLine at 1-800-932-0582, or e-mail the OIG at pafraud@state.pa.us.

Notes on DePaul.

LOUISVILLE _ Is Willie Coleman worth 27 points to DePaul?

Probably not, but the Blue Demons figured he might have helped in a 90-63 loss to Louisville. After struggling against Kansas on Thursday because of a sprained right wrist, he sat out Saturday's game.

``Willie is our senior,'' coach Pat Kennedy said. ``Today we did start four freshmen. Willie is one of our toughest competitors. We definitely need him to get back in there. He's been through these battles on the road in Conference USA.''

Coleman's replacement, freshman Rashon Burno, was 0 for 4 from the field.

``I wasn't nervous,'' Burno said. ``I was happy for my first start. At the beginning of the game we didn't control the tempo like we should. We just didn't come out ready to play from the opening tap.''

No-go, for now: Louisville is on NCAA probation because an assistant coach allegedly paid a hotel bill for the father of Cardinals player Nate Johnson.

The Cardinals, who are ineligible for the postseason, are appealing.

``They're playing for a real purpose,'' Kennedy said. ``When a program's going through some adversity, they pull together. I look at Cincinnati, and I think now Louisville. I think Louisville should be playing in the postseason if they win their appeal. I think (coach Denny Crum's) got them in a feverish pitch right now. They're playing as hard as anyone in the country right now.''

No worries: Kennedy said Saturday's debacle was a blip.

``A young team is going to hit a game or so like this during the course of a season,'' he said. ``They don't have the game-in-and-game-out experience of what it's like in college basketball, especially at this level. There's no question we'll get it back.''

Argo Interactive's core product, Actigate, allows existing web pages to be customised for and served to alternative Internet access devices such as Wireless Application Protocol ("WAP") phones, PDAs, and other thin clients.

Therefore, there is a need to re-author content in a cost-effective manner for these varied screen formats using multiple protocols. Argo Interactive provides the means to accomplish this.

This latest funding round will enable Argo Interactive to substantially expand its R&D and Marketing resources, and establish operational bases in both the USA and Asia.

Argo Interactive CEO Andrew Foyle commented: "It's a fantastic boost for us to receive financial endorsements from two of the most influential venture capital investors in the European marketplace. European technology leads the world in the emerging wireless Internet market. With the support of Apax Partners and 3i, we will be able to meet the demand for our product from a rapidly expanding customer base."

John McMonigall, a Director of Apax Partners, noted: "Argo Interactive has developed a benchmark technology. We are delighted to assist them in their expansion and enable others to benefit from the unique functionality and architecture of their software. Argo Interactive's software for wireless applications meets the needs of the changing Internet environment. We look forward to their international growth through further finance."

"Our increased funding of Argo Interactive is a demonstration of our commitment to their technology and growth potential," announced Matthew Mead, Investment Executive at 3i. "We look forward to their further development as new forms of Internet access proliferate. Argo Interactive is a pioneer in this field and we are delighted to help them expand."

Deloitte & Touche Corporate Finance acted as lead adviser to Argo Interactive in this transaction.

-Moodstocks to introduce high-tech product for smartphone users.

CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

15 July 2011 - French IT start-up Moodstocks has developed a high-technology product that facilitates research on the web with its new interface for image recognition.

Created in 2008, Moodstocks spent two and a half years in the incubator Centrale Paris to develop its technology platform that can scan an object or an image from a smartphone and do a search on the Internet for materials related to it.

To finance the research and development stage of its product, Moodstocks has raised EUR500,000 (USD707,000) from several "business angels". To commercialise it, the group seeks an additional funding of EUR3m.

Few large local companies have experimented with this technology to provide remote access to their catalog and order online. More than 200 developers are currently testing it.

You may have seen Pixar's new animated film, WALL-E. Unlike the studio's usual comedic turns, the new movie has a powerful message to get across: the planet is running to ruin because of our wasteful ways and insatiable appetite for consumerism. It's hardly a new message. In the UAE, where constant air-conditioning, oversized cars (carrying a single occupant), a lack of organised recycling, frequent jet travel, water desalination and 24-hour construction are de rigueur, we are among the world's worst culprits. A cursory glance through the international press in the morning can feel like an LAPD-style beating from the eco-police for those who live here.Yet the release of a high-budget movie with broad appeal can only be another step in the right direction. Judging by the number of plastic bags the average UAE shopkeeper would have you leave his premises with - and the number of bags many people accept, or even demand - the message hasn't penetrated yet.WALL-E's bleak vision of a refuse-filled future on Earth may shock those expecting cutesy Finding Nemo-style escapades. The Pixar artists have dug into the darkest recesses of their imaginations to show us where we could be heading if we continue to consume corporate mass marketing and also ignore the very real issues threatening our planet.

But there is a problem with making a film of this nature. If you should practise what you preach, then Disney (Pixar's parent company) should probably consider its role in the environment, too. Because while its celluloid is a call-to-arms for planetary health, it's new Ultimate WALL-E remote-control robot (available to pre-order from DisneyShopping.com for $249) is certainly not.The programmable toy can dance, play music and talk while his eyes light up and blink in the manner of the animated robot in the film. But the web site also admits he 'contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects.'And that's before we even get to his ecological rucksack, the name given to the amount of natural material employed to create a product (a mobile phone has an ecological rucksack of around 75kg, an aluminium can is around 8kg, etc). Since WALL-E will probably be made from fossil plastics in China, then shipped halfway around the world, he's likely to carry a fairly weighty rucksack of his own, especially when you consider that each of his microchips will probably cost the environment a hundred thousand times their eventual weight.Perhaps Disney's merchandising department didn't consider the hypocrisy of bringing this toy to the market, but it's a shame that a company brave enough

to make a high-budget film with a strong message on the environment can't resist making a quick buck by flouting its own guidance.

Postcards: keep on schedule, on message and on target.

The Internet is all the rage, yet tried and true advertising techniques are still very profitable for cleaning companies.

One of the most effective advertising media for cleaners is a postcard. With postcards you can get your clients to clean more frequently and guard them from your competition. For gaining brand new clients, postcards can also work extremely well if you follow a few basic rules.

Five essentials to get cleaning jobs with postcards:

1. Your target (who you send the postcard to)

2. Your key message

3. Your offer and call to action

4. Repetition gets you noticed

5. Get their attention

Your Target

Everything you do should be centered on your target prospect. If you are buying a mailing list, strongly consider which neighborhoods your ideal clients live in. Think about their income level. Think about the value of their home. You can buy a mailing list based around those criteria. You can target exactly the ideal client for your cleaning business. No other media will allow you to do this type of targeted marketing.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Want to keep your clients calling you back? Want to get referrals? Perhaps the best single best way to keep in touch with your existing clients is with a postcard. Sure, email newsletters are great, but they are not a replacement for good old-fashioned snail mail. In fact, I recommend you mail to your current clients monthly or every other month at the very least. Do this even if you only have a few clients on your mailing list.

These are people who have already raised their hand and said, "I have the money to afford your service and have a need for cleaning." Plus they already know you, so they're five times more likely to use you again. Don't rely on a refrigerator magnet to keep your company on their mind; mail to them often. Postcards work great for quick reminders about cleaning and to announce special offers. In fact, you can even incorporate your oversized postcard into a postcard/newsletter that really attracts attention.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Your Key Message

I look at a lot of postcards and ads for cleaning companies. The vast majority have little to no sales message whatsoever. I'll suggest that mailing a postcard with a cute kid or puppy dog with a headline like "Got Dirt?" won't get you many sales. Why? That headline has no benefit to the prospect. "Got Dirt?" isn't something they want.

You need to have a message that pulls the reader in and sets you apart from the competition. What do you do that's different? Are your guarantees better? Is your cleaning more thorough? Do you clean healthier? Are your employees friendlier?

Give them reasons why they should use you. Can't think of anything? If nothing else, this can be done by having a simple bullet list of "5 Reasons Why...." This is often overused, but it sells. It helps you give reasons why your prospect should hire your company over the rest.

Make sure your postcard has a unique benefit that is clearly explained in your headline and graphic.

Your Offer and Call to Action

Your offer is perhaps the most important part of your postcard. The offer could literally make or break the postcard. It's important to tailor your offer around your target. If you are mailing to a neighborhood of million dollar homes, the offer should be different than that aimed at the neighborhood of $200,000 homes.

For current clients, your offers should be specific to your relationship with them. Offers that are truly "for clients only" can do well. Also use postcards to cross promote your services. If you cleaned carpet for a client, send them a tile cleaning postcard the next month. If you did a water damage job for a client, tell them about your carpet and tile cleaning services with a different postcard.

If you were even remotely in the market to buy new carpet and you saw an ad that said, "Buy New Carpet and Get a FREE $500 Lowe's Gift Card," this would likely interest you. It's all in the offer.

And when I talk about an offer, I don't mean 10% or 20% or even 40% off. These type offers don't do much because they're not believable. Most often, your prospect just assumes you're inflating your prices so you can offer discounts. Instead, arranging package deals or giving away extra premiums work much better.

Once you make the offer, call the prospect to action! Ask for the sale. Simply tell them exactly what to do. Tell them to call "XXX-XXXX" and tell them who they'll be speaking with. And let them know if you'll be giving them an estimate on the phone or coming to their home for an exact quote. Take them by the hand and walk them through the process of doing business with you.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Repetition Gets You Noticed

When targeting new clients, mail a series of postcards. Notice I said "series." Don't mail one postcard and give up. In fact, realize that postcards take a series of messages to make an impact. The fact of the matter is you can't tell your entire story in one postcard. It's difficult to take a prospect from not knowing you at all to picking up the phone and calling you for cleaning. But sending a series of well-designed postcards with a great sales message will win them over.

The huge flaw that crushes a postcard campaign is infrequent mailings. For new prospects, mail one postcard today, the next in 7 days, and the next in another 7 days. Then you can pause for a couple months and start the same sequence again with perhaps a new series of postcards.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

For repeat clients, keep mailing to them every month or two for up to three years. How could they forget you? You'll inspire more frequent cleanings, referrals, and lock in a client for life if you mail even a mediocre postcard campaign.

Get Their Attention

One of the biggest things to remember in advertising is "Do something different." You don't want to be viewed as just another company sending out junk mail. Homeowners get lots of junk mail every week. Getting a postcard from you doesn't excite them--even if the offer is 10 rooms of carpet cleaning for $29.99.

Make your offer personal. If you're making a special offer to repeat clients, announce that your offer is strictly for repeat clients. If you're mailing to new prospects in Ashbury Hills, put in the subhead that this offer is strictly for homeowners in Ashbury Hills. Make the reader feel like the message and offer is just for them.

The competition is fierce. You're competing with everyone else that sends your prospect mail. If you send something show-stopping, they'll take a glance. They may even set all the other bills and junk mail to the side so they can sit down and read your postcard.

Think out of the box. It will take your company to new levels. Your new prospects will be interested, and your current clients will stay interested.

1 Know your essential actions

2 It's all about repetition: one shot will not do it

3 Be clear, concise and consistent with your message

CAL/OSHA RECOGNIZES VENTURA DAIRY FOR ITS WORKPLACE SAFETY PROGRAM.

Ventura (CA) -- The following information was released by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR):

Cal/OSHA Consultation staff today presented the Dairy Farmers of America Inc. facility in Ventura with a California Voluntary Protection Program (Cal/VPP) Star Certificate. The facility is now among just 83 sites statewide that have qualified for the program and are considered leaders in the field of workplace safety and health.

The Cal/VPP Star is a certification program managed by Cal/OSHA Consultation, a division of the California Department of Industrial Relations. Cal/VPP Star recognizes employers and their employees who have voluntarily managed outstanding safety and health programs that go beyond minimal Cal/OSHA standards. Successful applicants approved for participation in Cal/VPP Star receive state and national recognition and are exempt from Cal/OSHA programmed inspections.

"Cal/OSHA promotes safety and health by recognizing employers who take a hands-on approach to changing the safety culture in their work environment," said DIR Director John C. Duncan. "The Ca/VPP Star is achieved only by those who represent the highest level of commitment to workplace safety and Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. has proven that they deserve this prestigious acknowledgement."

The DFA Ventura site worked for approximately two years preparing for the Cal/VPP evaluation. Safety measures taken by the company included improvements to electrical circuits, equipment safety upgrades including machine guarding, and installation of guardrails.

"Cal/VPP Star plays an important role in Cal/OSHA's mission of making safety an inherent part of the workplace environment," said Cal/OSHA Chief Len Welsh. "DFA Ventura has shown a commitment to continually improve their safety culture and we are honored to welcome them as a California leader for workplace safety and health."

"We are proud to join an elite group of worksites as a Cal/VPP Star," said Tim Hampshire, DFA Ventura Plant Manager. "It is a remarkable honor and a true testament to the effort we put into creating a work environment where our employees and our customers can be assured that safety is a top priority."

The Dairy Farmers of America Inc. Ventura site employs nearly 100 workers and produces bottled coffee beverages for retail distribution, including Starbuck's Frappuccino. The site receives raw materials that are blended into flavored coffee beverages. The Ventura site has been in operation since 1997.

The rundown.(curvatures)(Brief article)

GLAAD has released their third Network Responsibility Index, rating quality, quantity and diversity of LGBT representation on television. HBO scored the highest, with ABC leading broadcast networks and NBC and CBS receiving "failing" grades. In an interview with AfterElton.com, CBS president Nina Tassler was questioned about her network's poor rating and responded,"It is a source of concern for me personally and for the network "... Everyone's favorite cartoon baby, Stewie from Family Guy is part of our family. Creator Seth MacFarlane outed baby Stewie in an interview with Playboy. He even spills the beans on a scrapped episode where Stewie would have come out and faced harassment at school ... Hannah Page and Jacob Brock, two students from Yulee High School in Florida, teamed up with the ACLU against their school board for refusing to allow their gay-straight alliance to meet on campus. U.S.

District Judge Henry Lee Adams ruled that the school must not interfere with its ability to "advocate for tolerance, respect and equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people" ... The Internet filtering software legally required to be installed in Tennessee public schools was blocking LGBT advocacy sites but, in response to pressure, Knox County Schools Superintendent Jim McIntyre confirmed that the software is no longer blocking LGBT content ... Rockstar energy drinks has expanded their LGBT-friendly corporate policy by donating $100,000 to several LGBT orgs, so next time you need a hyper-caffeinated drink you can pick one that keeps you awake and supports your values ... A Salt Lake City prosecutor dropped charges against two men, Derek Jones and Matthew Aune, who ran into trouble for kissing in the Main Street Plaza. The seemingly public space is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The couple was detained by private security guards and later cited by police.

A mother to inspire us all with true hope.

Byline: Allison Pearson

TIS the season when we celebrate a baby and his mother. Nutty vicars may tell us we can't sing O Little Town Of Bethlehem because it's no longer relevant to life in Jesus's birthplace, but the Madonna and Child remains one of the most moving images ever created. Mary cradling her newborn son is the logo of love without end.

You need faith to believe in Christ, but anyone can place hope in the power of a mother's love.

Faith in motherhood took a bit of a battering in 2008. Every time you picked up a paper there was yet another story about a negligent harpy who was doing something unspeakable to her kids. Just this week, a mother was cautioned by police for injuring a toddler while drunk in charge of a buggy. And they're not easy to manoeuvre even while sober.

Another mum seemed to embody the grotesque vanity and selfishness of the age when she sold her baby twins for [pounds sterling]9,000 to pay for liposuction. Get rid of the fat, get rid of the kids; it was all the same to her.

Back at the start of the year, there was Anne Darwin who cruelly conned her two sons into believing that their father had died in a canoeing accident. Then there was Joanne Hill, jailed for life for drowning her disabled daughter Naomi, aged four, in the bath because she was ashamed of her child's illness.

If you thought that was hard to match for barbarity then you hadn't reckoned on the mum of Baby P who spent hours exchanging flirty banter in internet chatrooms while her boyfriend used her little son as a punchbag.

Karen Matthews displayed a similarly devastating lack of maternal concern.

Police wanted Karen to see kidnapped Shannon as soon as she was found, but the family liaison officer says Karen insisted on stopping at a sandwich shop because she was hungry. 'I had to hide my disgust,' recalls DC Christine Freeman.

Disgust is the correct reaction. If we judge mothers harshly as a society then perhaps it's because instinctively we know what lifelong damage a bad parent can do. A social worker predicted that Matthews was a problem because she was 'unable to put her children's needs above her own'.

When I heard that, I thought of the millions of mums who don't make the headlines. The ones who put their own needs last and get precious little credit for it. At this time of year, it is the lesserknown Mother Christmas who slaves to create magical memories for her family.

She will buy all the presents, resourcefully make the budget stretch so each child will be delighted on December 25.

And who gets the credit? A big fat bearded loser in a scarlet babygro.

Thank you, Santa! For me, there is one truly outstanding mother of this year. She's not a celebrity.

I know that whatever fame she has she would give back in an instant because of the agonising way it came to her.

Melanie Jones, 42, was a mum of two in Croxteth, Liverpool, waiting for her 11-year-old son to get home from football training.

Then she got a call saying Rhys had been shot. Moments later, Melanie was in a pub carpark. One eyewitness described the way Mrs Jones knelt on the floor, her trousers soaked in blood.

Cradling her boy in her arms, she kept saying: 'Stay with us, son. Stay with us.' Melanie and her husband Stephen, a retail manager for Tesco, had given their sons a stable, happy upbringing. It had shielded the boys from the gang culture around them. Until the day poor Rhys got caught in the crossfire between the Crocky Crew and the Strand Gang. ADISTRAUGHT Melanie Jones publicly challenged the parents of her son's killer.

'They must know what their kid is up to or don't they care? I knew where my son was. I knew where my sons were all the time. If they were going out I knew where they were and what time they'd be home. Their parents don't care. I blame the parents.' Melanie spoke for all those mothers who have reared their young with love and care, only to see them threatened or destroyed by kids who had neither of those. No politician has ever been so brave or dared to say so much.

Melanie Jones and millions of mums like her are holding the line for the ordinary strengths and virtues that have underpinned family life for centuries, but which are all too often overlooked or taken for granted by a State that thinks it knows best.

I salute them all. This Christmas it has taken a mother who loved and lost her child to inspire us, against all odds, with hope..

Rebecca's the real sports superstar

AND the winner and runner-up of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award are two blokes who do their sport while sitting down.

Chris Hoy and Lewis Hamilton seem like perfectly nice chaps, but theirs was undoubtedly a great victory for couch potatoes everywhere.

Meanwhile Rebecca Adlington (left) the mermaid with an outboard motor who left the opposition gasping like stranded goldfish came third. Forgive me, folks, while I set fire to my Christmas Radio Times in protest. For a 19- year-old girl from Mansfield to pull off two gold medals in the pool, never mind set a world record, was astonishing..

Becky would have become the first swimmer to win BBC Sports Personality since Anita Lonsborough in 1962, but it was not to be.

They gave it to a chap on a pushbike with a bedpan on his head.

The pity is that Becky is such a great role model for sports-shy British girls, who will be wondering what exactly you have to do to beat the boys. 'I'll look a bit minging next to Lewis Hamilton's Pussycat Doll girlfriend,' she said before the ceremony.

Well, love, you didn't. You looked fantastic. And when Chris's Lycra shorts are just a teeny footnote in history, Dame Rebecca Adlington will still be making waves..

It's a dumb wrap

An internet gift company is offering a presentwrapping service so shoddy that women will believe their menfolk have taken the trouble to pack the parcel themselves.

Firebox.com is paying 20 of its male forklift truck drivers to wrap presents as quickly as possible, using cheap paper unevenly cut with nail scissors and ugly brown duct tape.

The charmingly named 'Cr*pWrap' service is meant to display all the authentic traits of the male present-wrapper. Steady on, what crude gender stereotyping is this? In my experience, if you actually manage to pull off a festive miracle and get a man to do some wrapping, chances are he will suddenly turn into a perfectionist Origami bore. With their spatial awareness and vast experience in making model airplanes, men are perfectly capable of wrapping presents beautifully. As in most domestic areas of life, they just pretend to be clueless so they can get away with doing naff all..

Strictly striptease

'WHY are the judges so mean to the boys?' demanded my daughter, after the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final turned into the kind of farce you would expect from a 4th Form drama production.

'Because they're wearing clothes,' suggested her little brother. And he's not wrong, is he? Rachel (right) is so desperate to win that she treats every episode like a round of strip poker. At the present rate, she'll be dancing the final in just 6in of dental floss. Let's hit the judges where it hurts.

Vote Tom!

All together now ... I'm Dreaming Of A Tight Christmas

IN VIEW of the seasonal doom and gloom, I thought it might be time to update a well-loved Yuletide classic for these credit-crunch times. Please feel free to come up with your own verses.

With sincere apologies to Bing Crosby.

All together now: I'm dreaming of a tight Christmas Just as the house and car must go With the frozen robin and children sobbin' To hear the bailiffs in the snow..

I'm dreaming of a tight Christmas.

Just as the lights begin to blow With the fusebox smoking, and children choking And grillpans dropping on my toe.

I'm dreaming of a tight Christmas With every shopping list I write There is one less X-Box, and no hot sex frocks, And far less Turkish in Delight..

I'm dreaming of a tight Christmas Why did our Woolies have to close? So it's tinfoil llamas and used pyjamas And Rudolph minus the red nose.

I'm dreaming of a tight Christmas.

How long does Uncle plan to stay? So it's warm, flat Fanta for sodding Santa, Whose sleigh has just been towed away.

I'm dreaming of a tight Christmas, But not as tight as yours, old chaps, You banking bosses brought all our losses So may all your bonuses collapse..

Infonet Enhances Its Managed Security Services With Filtering Technology From Websense, Inc.

Global Communications Provider to Offer Multinational Enterprises Award-Winning Websense Web Filtering and Web Security

Websense, Inc. , the world's leading provider of employee internet management solutions, today announced that Infonet Services Corporation , a leading provider of global communications services for multinationals, is integrating Websense Enterprise(R) web filtering and web security functionality into its Managed Security Services portfolio to help its enterprise customers reduce the risks associated with employee use of the internet.

Infonet owns and operates The World Network(R), a global data network that services the communications needs of more than 2,600 multinational organizations in more than 180 countries and territories. These organizations rely on Infonet to provide secure and reliable services, including internet access for employees. An important aspect of all of Infonet's communications services is security. Infonet's Managed Security Services portfolio includes firewall services, intrusion protection services, and additional security services that can be layered for more rigorous protection, such as network threat analysis capabilities, authentication services, instant message (IM) control and antivirus protection.

By adding Websense Enterprise web filtering and web security to its portfolio of Managed Security Services offerings, Infonet is enabling multinational enterprises to manage employee use of the internet -- a capability that promotes productivity while limiting corporate security risks and legal liability.

"The risk of unmanaged Internet usage in the workplace is a growing concern for our clients," said Martin Dipper, vice president of Security Services, Infonet. "With large corporations in particular, there are tremendous productivity benefits that come with defining and enforcing policies for Internet usage. Add in additional protection from internet-based threats to the network and protection from legal liability risks, and the value of Websense(R) to our clients becomes clear."

Websense automates an organization's internet use policy with highly flexible options that enable employees to reap the benefits of the web as a tool for work-related activities, while safeguarding against access to potentially harmful or inappropriate sites.

Available through Infonet's Managed Firewall (MFW) URL Filtering and Blocking service, multinational organizations now have the ability to set custom policies to manage employee access to dangerous or inappropriate content, such as sites infected with malicious mobile code or harboring adult content. In addition, advanced filtering technology from Websense allows IT departments to deny access to websites that contain spyware applications, keyloggers and viruses.

"Websense Enterprise provides an additional layer of security for vulnerability management of blended internet threats," said Curt Staker, president of Websense, Inc. "In addition to our web filtering and security capabilities, Websense software is highly scalable which makes it an ideal integration for Infonet and its multinational clients. Our software has a proven track record for seamlessly supporting large, global, multifaceted organizations."

Websense leverages a highly sophisticated database of more than 80 website categories, enabling organizations to set patented flexible filtering options such as time-based quotas, in which organizations set time limits for employee access to non-business-related websites such as banking and shopping.

Fly away for [pounds sterling]73 as giants fight to shift 5m holidays; Struggling package operators offer last-minute bargains at 1970s prices.

Byline: SEAN POULTER

A WEEK in the sun is available for as little as [pounds sterling]73 as desperate travel firms try to sell 5million unsold package holidays.

Those willing to book a lastminute deal can take advantage of astonishing bargains on the Internet.

Summer package holiday bookings are down by around 10 per cent on last year, forcing the big four travel firms to slash prices to destinations such as Spain, the Algarve and Greece - in some cases to their lowest level since the 1970s.

The reductions come as package holiday companies such as Thomas Cook, Thomson, MyTravel and First Choice fight back against the impact of budget airlines, which have encouraged families to create their own trips.

Many tour operators are effectively dumping cheap holidays with lastminute holiday company specialists which mainly operate through the web.

The result is that it is possible to make huge savings, for example by buying a two-week Mediterranean package holiday, which will be much cheaper than a similar break in Britain.

The holiday search website Teletext Holidays was yesterday offering a sevennight self- catering holiday for two adults in Chania, Crete, with immediate departure for [pounds sterling]73 each.

There was a week in Dalaman, Turkey, for [pounds sterling]91, and several deals for [pounds sterling]99 at popular resorts in Majorca and Heraklion.

While these are most likely to suit footloose young adults, there are also bargains on family breaks, even at the height of the school holidays.

The site advertised seven nights for a family of four in a four-star hotel on the Algarve on a bed and breakfast basis at a total of [pounds sterling]1,196 - down by 30 per cent.

A survey by Morgan Stanley suggests the average cost of a two-week holiday in Spain, leaving on July 30, is [pounds sterling]2,556, and [pounds sterling]1,787 in Turkey.

Both are cheaper than a twoweek break in the Lake District, which is priced at [pounds sterling]2,755.

Thomas Cook is running a marketing campaign based on the suggestion that some holidays are now cheaper than up to 30 years ago. For example, a self- catering deal to Palma Nova, Majorca, which was [pounds sterling]119 in 1979, can now be bought for a last minute price of [pounds sterling]99.

A Thomas Cook spokesman said: 'I can't remember it as tough as this in all the years that we've been through. The market is 10 per cent down and won't come back to level between now and the end of the season.' TUI UK, the German company which owns Thomson and Lunn Poly, said total package holiday bookings across all companies are down by 8-10 per cent on a year ago.

The Association of British Travel Agents said: 'There are a lot of very good offers out there.' A spokesman added: 'Numbers to Spain are down. Greece has suffered from initial huge prices offered in connection with the Olympics.

But prices have come down now.' Cheaper destinations such as Bulgaria, Croatia-and Turkey are doing well, while the strength of the pound against the dollar has also boosted sales to the U.S.

Retail analyst Mintel said families were opting out of the traditional sunshine package holiday in favour of creating their own trips, particularly in Britain.

It said that some 32 per cent of Britons are put off popular Mediterranean resorts by the loutish behaviour of their own fellow countrymen.

Mintel analyst Amanda Lintott said: 'Generally, families are less likely to go on holidays abroad, preferring to go on independent domestic holidays, a large proportion of which are visits to friends and family.'

Hewlett-Packard's cloud lag spurring lowest valuation.

SAN FRANCISCO: Hewlett-Packard (HP), which paid the highest multiple on record for a computer company six months ago, now needs to spend as much as double the historical valuation for software takeovers to catch up in cloud computing.

Red Hat, Informatica and Tibco Software, which Goldman Sachs Group says may be targets as Hewlett-Packard adds software, trade as high as 42 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda).

That compares with the median 18 times for software and Internet acquisitions in the last five years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Leo Apotheker, 57, started as chief executive officer in November after an interim CEO paid a record 325 times Ebitda for 3Par following a bidding war with Dell, the data show.

The former SAP AG CEO inherited a company that trades at the lowest valuation relative to earnings among the largest US technology companies and faces slowing sales growth over the next two years.

While Apotheker said this month he will follow a "disciplined" approach to acquisitions for Hewlett-Packard, he may be forced to pay up to offset cuts in development spending by ousted CEO Mark Hurd and close the gap with Oracle and International Business Machines in cloud computing, which lets users consume software and data over the Internet.

Bill Wohl, a spokesman for Palo Alto, California-based Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest computer maker, declined to comment on potential acquisitions.

"With an eye toward the strategy laid out by our CEO, we intend to build, buy or partner," Wohl said. "Our M&A strategy is consistent with our overall company strategy." To do that, the company needs to buy, build, or strike partnerships for database software, data analysis applications, software development tools and security software, Shane Robison, Hewlett-Packard's chief technology and strategy officer who heads mergers and acquisitions, said in an interview.

"The message is growth, and if they're going to go for small, high-growth companies, they're going to have to pay up," said Jayson Noland, an analyst at Robert W. Baird in San Francisco. "Hopefully not as much as 3Par."Hewlett-Packard may have a high interest in Red Hat, the largest seller of Linux software.
